Molybdenum prices soaring, driving surges in 316L stainless steel in China

Skyrocketing molybdenum costs triggered a rapid price rally for 316L stainless steel yesterday (May 12). In China, spot prices for this high-end grade jumped by more than CNY 1,000 per ton in a single day.

Moreover, Indonesia Tsingshan reacted by raising its 316L export surcharges by US$200 per ton, bringing the premium to US$2,100 per ton.

Tight supply at mines and steady demand from steel mills pushed raw material costs upward. Ferro-molybdenum prices experienced their largest recent daily gain, rising by CNY 17,000. Therefore, some steel producers stopped taking new orders for 316L products to evaluate rising production expenses.

Market participants said that this sudden cost-driven explosion puts significant pressure on retail pricing across the global market.
