Mexico's government submitted a 2026 budget proposal that would introduce new import tariffs on more than 1,400 products, many from Asia. Treasury Secretary Édgar Amador said the taxes would affect countries with which Mexico does not have a commercial treaty and are intended to strengthen domestic production and reduce trade deficits.

While not directly naming China, the move coincides with US pressure on Mexico to present a united trade front against China. The proposed tariffs are within World Trade Organization (WTO) guidelines and are expected to be approved due to the governing party's majority in Congress.
