Mexico aims to eliminate mutual tariffs on steel and aluminum in USMCA negotiations

This Tuesday, March 10, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her government will seek the elimination of tariffs on steel, aluminum, and vehicles during the review negotiations of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which will begin next week.

This initiative arises in response to the restrictions imposed under Section 232, which Washington applies citing national security reasons to limit imports. Mexico considers these tariffs detrimental to trade within the region.

The Mexican President commented that Washington has put two central issues on the table for the agreement review: compliance with rules of origin and strengthening regional supply chains.

The two countries will discuss these issues in their first round of negotiations, which will take place on Monday, March 16.
