Mexican government seeks path to increase domestic steel production as steel sector faces lowest production level in 20 years

8 May 2026 14:40 reported by Raul Lee

A A A
According to Mexico's National Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (CANACERO by its Spanish abbreviation), the domestic steel production is approximately 14 million tons per year, while steel consumption is close to 28 million tons.

This means that half of the steel demand is covered by imported steel, while the sector is operating at one of its lowest levels in almost two decades. However, the chamber indicates that the imbalance is not due to a lack of capacity, but rather to unfair practices by imported steel.

Faced with this scenario, the Mexican federal government is outlining a plan to close the gap and minimize its dependence, aiming to produce up to 97% of the steel it consumes and only import special steels that cannot be produced within the country.
