The Italian steelmaker Marcegaglia, in partnership with Danieli, has signed a EUR 450 million agreement to build a new steel mill in Fos-sur-Mer, France, as part of the EUR 1 billion Mistral project.

The facility aims to strengthen Marcegaglia’s control over raw materials and boost high-value-added production. Once operational, it will produce more than 2 million tons of steel annually using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology, along with up to 3 million tons of hot-rolled coil, covering 35% of Marcegaglia’s slab and coil needs.

The plant will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% through scrap metal, low-carbon DRI, and nuclear and renewable energy.

A final investment decision is expected by the end of 2026, pending French regulatory approvals.
