Higher sales volumes push Taiwan’s CSC back into profitability in April

Taiwan’s China Steel Corporation (CSC) posted a consolidated pre-tax profit of NT$485.19 million for April, rebounding from a pre-tax loss of NT$394 million in March. This performance ended a three-month losing period and hit a 14-month profitability high.

The revenue in April hiked by 7.9% monthly and 2.15% annually to NT$30.89 billion, exceeding the NT$30 billion threshold for the first time since March of last year. Individual carbon steel sales climbed to 695,654 tons, a year-to-date monthly high.

CSC said the growth was due to increased steel shipment volumes and improved unit profit margins, which offset reduced mining investment dividends. Cumulatively, the first four months of the year recorded a pre-tax loss of NT$481.73 million due to lower average steel prices and reduced foreign exchange gains earlier in the period.

Global steel market conditions are improving. Supply is tightening as Middle East geopolitical friction raises energy, shipping, and alloy expenses. Concurrently, US economic growth remains steady, Chinese production regulations help curb unfair underpricing, and the AI server boom drives domestic demand. Price increases by major European, American, Vietnamese, and Chinese mills support a positive outlook for future revenues.
