Greater Lincolnshire Mayor inks UK Steel Charter, pledging preference for British steel in public projects

Andrea Jenkyns, the Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire, signed the UK Steel Charter at British Steel’s Scunthorpe site, committing Greater Lincolnshire to prioritizing domestically produced steel in public projects.

By joining the initiative, the regional authority pledged to strengthen support for the UK steel industry through procurement policies favoring British-made steel whenever feasible.

The charter aims to increase demand for domestic steel, support manufacturing jobs, strengthen local supply chains, and encourage investment in the sector.

Developed by UK Steel and other industry stakeholders, the charter encourages public bodies and infrastructure developers to consider social, environmental, and economic benefits when sourcing steel products.

The move comes as the UK steel sector continues to face pressure from high energy costs, global overcapacity, import competition, and decarbonization investment requirements.
