Geomega & Rio Tinto team up for bauxite residue valorization technology

13 Oct 2025 15:43 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Geomega Resources Inc., through its subsidiary Innord Inc., signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with Rio Tinto on September 19, 2025, for its Bauxite Residue Valorization Technology.

The agreement includes Rio Tinto purchasing a demonstration license for Circuits 1 and 2 of the technology, which could lead to the construction of a demonstration plant in Saguenay, Quebec.

The technology is expected to help Rio Tinto improve the environmental footprint of alumina refining by decreasing residue storage while extracting direct reduced iron (DRI) grade ore and critical minerals such as rare earth element concentrate and titanium concentrate.

Geomega will receive payments of up to $4.5 million if the demonstration plant construction proceeds. The company will retain ownership of the technology's intellectual property.
