Fortescue accelerates development of large-scale green energy grid

17 Apr 2026 13:19 reported by Stanley Wang

Fortescue Ltd announced it is accelerating the delivery of the world’s first fully integrated green energy grid designed to eliminate fossil fuels from large-scale industry at a city-like scale. The company plans to replicate and commercialize this technology globally.

The system focuses on replacing diesel, a fully imported fuel subject to price volatility and heavy subsidies. Unlike other large renewable hubs, Fortescue’s off-grid solution will operate continuously to support industrial decarbonization.

By early next year, Fortescue expects to complete 290MW of renewable capacity to support ore processing in the Pilbara, enabling daytime green operations. Later, the system is expected to power all operations for 24 hours without fossil fuels, ahead of its 2030 real zero target.

Full completion of the Pilbara green grid is targeted by 2028, including 1.2GW of solar, over 600MW of wind, and 4-5GWh of battery storage. The company expects to save US$100 million in fuel costs next year and further reduce unit costs.
