A new European Commission consultation on future import regulations is causing hesitation among stainless steel buyers. With the current measures set to expire in mid-2026, many importers have paused new overseas orders. The uncertainty is compounded by new Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) taxes, which begin in January 2026.

The consultation has raised the possibility of US-style tariffs and potential early implementation of new rules. This lack of clarity has subdued demand during the summer and contributed to a further drop in stainless steel 304 and 316 prices.

In addition, the proposals have also drawn criticism from major stainless steel suppliers, who say the measures could violate international trade agreements.
