Nearly 67 years after its inauguration, the Durgapur Steel Plant in West Bengal is set to expand with a second unit, backed by a projected investment of Rs 35,000 crore that marks a landmark moment in both the city's industrial journey and India's broader steel manufacturing ambitions. 

Established in the late 1950s with British assistance, the plant has long served as a cornerstone of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), renowned for its integrated production facilities, technological innovation, and significant contributions to national infrastructure. 

Since commencing operations in 1959, it was among India's first integrated steel plants and has since evolved into a leading producer of long steel products. To this day, it holds the unique distinction of being the country's sole producer of forged railway wheels and axles. 

The planned second unit is expected to build on this legacy, further reinforcing Durgapur's role as a pivotal hub in India's growing steel industry.
