Century Aluminum resumes production at Grundartangi smelter

29 Apr 2026 13:14 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Century Aluminum Company has begun restarting the second potline at its Norðurál smelter in Grundartangi, Iceland, ahead of its original timeline. This specific line accounts for approximately two-thirds of the plant’s total capacity. Workers energized the initial pots and plan to reach nearly full production by the end of July. The reactivation became possible after specialists repaired transformers that suffered an unexpected failure earlier this year.

While temporary repairs are currently in place, the company ordered permanent replacement transformers for installation this fall. President and CEO Jesse Gary praised the team's resilience in restoring operations under challenging conditions. This accelerated restart, combined with production expansion at the Mt. Holly site, supports Century Aluminum’s goal of satisfying market demand with increased urgency.
