CARES unveils CBAM verification service for steel sector

CARES, a UK-based certification body, has launched a dedicated verification service to help steel companies comply with the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

The EU CBAM entered its definitive phase on January 1, 2026, with certificate surrender financial obligations for 2026 imports set to begin in 2027, requiring exporters to submit independently verified emissions data.

Tailored for the steel sector, the service covers raw materials, such as pig iron, ferro-alloys, hot briquetted iron (HBI), direct reduced iron (DRI), and semi-finished/finished steel products.

CARES has initiated accreditation with an EU national accreditation body to ensure compliance and acceptance of verification results.

Additionally, CARES noted the UK’s CBAM will take effect on January 1, 2027.
