British Steel's 28 first-year apprentices—10 electrical, 12 mechanical, and 6 structural—have begun working on the Scunthorpe site after finishing a two-week plant preparation programme, following their initial year of training with local provider CATCH.
The programme featured tours of key operational areas, including the Ore Preparation Plant, Basic Oxygen Steelmaking, Scunthorpe Rod Mill, engineering workshops, and the blast furnaces, giving apprentices a deeper understanding of the steelmaking process.
Additional health and safety training covered gas safety, working at height, fire warden duties, and confined space procedures, building on the trade skills gained during their year at CATCH. Apprentices also visited the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe to attend the Steel Exhibition and learn about the town's steelmaking heritage.
Altogether, the programme equipped apprentices with essential site knowledge, practical skills, and safety awareness to support their future careers at British Steel.
