Brazil’s steel industry faces a turning point in green transition

Brazil’s steel industry is at a critical turning point as global pressure to cut emissions and shift toward sustainable production continues to intensify. Despite having strong advantages in renewable energy and abundant scrap supply, the sector still relies heavily on traditional blast furnace technology using coal, which is becoming less competitive.

Experts say the future of the industry lies in transitioning to electric arc furnaces (EAF) powered by cleaner energy, which can significantly reduce emissions and improve competitiveness, especially as markets such as Europe impose increasingly strict carbon standards.

However, the transition faces several challenges, including a lack of clear policy support, dependence on legacy production models, and limited infrastructure for scrap collection and processing. Without addressing these barriers, Brazil’s steel industry risks falling behind in the global race toward green steel.
