ArcelorMittal is set to stop steel production at its Duisburg-Ruhrort site in Germany in October 2027. The closure will cover the steelmaking, continuous casting and billet rolling facilities and is expected to affect around 550 of the site’s approximately 800 employees. 

The wire rod mill, however, will remain in operation, using billets sourced from other ArcelorMittal plants as well as external suppliers.

The planned shutdown follows the expiry of ArcelorMittal’s long-term agreement with thyssenkrupp Steel for liquid pig iron supply at the end of September 2027. ArcelorMittal had previously terminated the agreement due to higher carbon-related costs and was unable to secure a viable alternative supply under competitive conditions. 

The company also assessed the possibility of introducing electric arc furnace production at Duisburg but found the option economically unfeasible. High production costs and the difficult environment facing the European steel industry were also cited in connection with the decision.
