ArcelorMittal, the second largest steelmaker in the world, is suspending its long steel shipments in Mexico for the rest of 2025 due to the need to shut down its blast furnace in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán State.

According to Víctor Cairo, CEO of ArcelorMittal in Mexico, a pair of power outages on July 22 caused a technical shutdown at the plant due to damage to three turbines that are necessary for the safe operation of the blast furnace.

However, the state-owned electricity company, the Federal Electricity Commission, stated that the blast furnace shutdown was not related to the power outage, but rather to a failure at one of the plant's substations.
