Alunorte cuts alumina refinery output by 50% due to gas supply shortages

13 Aug 2026 14:00 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Norsk Hydro reduced operations at its Alunorte alumina refinery in Brazil by 50% after supplier CELBA reported natural gas supply disruptions.

The refinery enacted contingency plans, including purchasing spot market gas, to mitigate the shortage. Estimated third-quarter financial impacts for the Bauxite and Alumina segment range from US$75 million to US$100 million due to lost output and higher spot prices.

Normal operating capacity will resume once gas availability stabilizes.
