Aluminum Association seeks US export restrictions on scrap

The Aluminum Association issued a white paper, "Scrap the Exports, Save U.S. Supply," calling for government intervention to restrict aluminum scrap exports. The association contends that the US currently runs a ~1.3 million tons trade deficit in aluminum scrap, weakening the competitive edge of American manufacturers.

CEO Charles Johnson said that scrap is a vital feedstock for the US industry. The white paper proposes several measures, including an immediate ban on used beverage container (UBC) exports outside of North America. Other proposals involve updating US Harmonized Tariff Schedule (USHTS) codes to better track flows and investing in new collection technology.

The group's goal is to keep high-quality scrap in the US, noting its importance as a strategic asset for manufacturing and national defense.
