Algoma Steel restarts EAF production following interim power agreement with IESO

8 Sep 2026 16:40 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Algoma Steel resumed steel manufacturing and shipping over the weekend after igniting its electric arc furnace (EAF) on August 29, 2026.

The restart utilizes interim operating arrangements established with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) despite an ongoing turbine outage at the Lake Superior Power facility. IESO is evaluating upcoming provincial power grid maintenance to minimize operational disruptions.

Algoma Steel collaborates with General Electric and external partners to repair the damaged turbine or secure a replacement unit to restore full power generation capacity. The company continues evaluating financial impacts and mitigation strategies as manufacturing operations stabilize.
