AISI warns of rising global overcapacity threatening US steel industry and jobs

21 Apr 2026 15:47 reported by Vicky Wang

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) warns that expanding global steel overcapacity is placing growing pressure on the US industry and jobs, urging stronger trade enforcement.

It notes that subsidies and non-market policies continue to drive supply-demand imbalance, intensifying export competition and market distortions. China remains the primary source, increasingly using transshipment, minor product modifications, and indirect trade to bypass restrictions.

AISI calls for stricter tariff enforcement and broader policy actions to safeguard long-term competitiveness.
