It was reported that the US Department of Commerce (USDOC) announced on Wednesday (August 14th) that it will launch an investigation to examine whether the corrosion-resistant steel products produced by Taiwan and China but slightly processed in other countries to evade US’ tariffs. This was the first time that the USDOC independently launched this kind of investigation without application from domestic producers.

The products involved from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Malaysia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates will be investigated by the USDOC. If the USDOC found that these products evaded US’ tariffs with fake labeling, the additional punitive tariffs will be imposed.

After the USDOC imposed anti-dumping duties and countervailing duties on corrosion-resistant steel products from Taiwan and China last year, the imports from the two countries to the US market deceased subsequently. However, the imports from the forementioned five countries have increased obviously, which was what the USDOC was currently probing.
