Primetals Technologies finishes study for MagIron’s US merchant pig iron project

14 Sep 2026 14:48 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Primetals Technologies finalized a concept and economic evaluation for MagIron regarding large-scale granulated pig iron production integrated with existing American industrial infrastructure.

The evaluation identifies three viable technical pathways delivering two million metric tons of granulated pig iron annually: MIDREX® Flex direct reduction followed by electric smelting, MIDREX® Flex direct reduction followed by electric arc furnace and ladle furnace processing, and conventional blast furnace manufacturing.

MagIron plans to leverage processing and logistics assets across Minnesota and Indiana, addressing a strategic vulnerability where domestic steelmakers import virtually all merchant pig iron needs.

Production commissioning could materialize within two to three years post-investment decision, supplying roughly 33% to 50% of total national requirements.
