MagIron evaluates large-scale domestic pig iron production

5 Aug 2026 15:37 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
MagIron completed a concept and economic study with Primetals Technologies evaluating three production pathways for large-scale granulated pig iron.

The project aims to produce two million tonnes per year, supplying up to half of the domestic merchant pig iron consumed by United States electric arc furnace steelmakers.

The evaluation estimates capital expenditures between US$1.6 billion and US$2.3 billion, with annual EBITDA projected between US$400 million and US$500 million.

By leveraging existing infrastructure valued at US$1.3 billion, the initiative seeks to reduce reliance on foreign imports and strengthen national industrial supply chains.
