Indonesia is eager to become an EV manufacturing hub, trying to produce EV batteries based on its rich nickel reserves. The government has also been launching a series of incentives to carmakers.

Indonesia's investment minister, Rosan Roeslani, said that Vietnamese EV maker VinFast had set a plan to install around 100,000 charging stations in Indonesia after President Prabowo Subianto met company representatives on March 11.

The minister also said VinFast's factory in West Java province would start running in 2026, with a production capacity of 50,000 units annually. The company had invested US$200 million in an EV assembly plant in 2024.

With more affordable EV models coming out, the adoption of electric cars in the country has also risen in recent months.
