The Bureau of International Recycling’s (BIR) December World Mirror on Nonferrous Metals highlighted significant challenges impacting the nonferrous scrap trade, particularly in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Malaysia’s Port Klang, a critical hub, is paralyzed by severe congestion due to intensified customs inspections as part of an anti-corruption crackdown, according to Stella Ying Wang of American Iron & Metal LP. In Thailand, government crackdowns on noncompliant recycling facilities have disrupted operations, further straining regional trade systems. Besides, Malaysia’s tighter restrictions have reduced Japan’s copper exports to the country.

Wang emphasized the need for systemic reforms, pointing to infrastructure limitations for managing recycled material imports. Meanwhile, U.S. and European contributors cite ongoing supply challenges. Rick Dobkin of Shapiro Metals highlights tight aluminum scrap availability due to new mills and slower manufacturing, while low material volumes in Europe, especially in aluminum.
