According to the Journal of Coatings Technology and Research, a study developed a hybrid epoxy coating containing silicon dioxide (SiO2) and graphene oxide (GO) to significantly improve the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of aluminum Al6061-T5 in aerospace applications.

The study evaluated the effects of GO concentrations of 0%, 0.1%, and 0.5%, and used a sol-gel process to integrate SiO2 particles into the epoxy resin matrix.

The results showed that 0.5% GO improved hardness (up to 9H), abrasion resistance (by 35%), and corrosion resistance (lasting up to 500 hours).

Contact angle measurements indicate that the coating is hydrophobic and provides effective anti-corrosion protection, securing the coating provides long-term protection for aluminum surfaces in harsh environments.
