SSAB, a Sweden-based steel company, and Parmaco, a Finnish smart building company, have established a fossil-free steel partnership to build the first concept building made of fossil-free steel in 2025.

Parmaco planned to use experimental or trial deliveries of fossil-free steel, developed with HYBRIT technology throughout the whole structure, which would mark the first time that all steel elements in a building are made of SSAB’s fossil-free steel.

The construction will start in early 2025 and will be completed by the year's end.

SSAB started testing its HYBRIT fossil-free steel production in northern Sweden in 2020, with the aim of completely eliminating the use of coking coal. In August 2024, the company announced the successful production of fossil-free steel and began industrial-scale production.

Fossil-free steel production is achieved by replacing coal and coke with fossil-free energy sources like green hydrogen, thereby reducing CO2 emissions to zero. The by-product is water instead of CO2.
