China’s June scrap imports soar by 11.2% y-o-y

According to data, China imported 461,000 tons of scraps in this June, increasing by 11.2% year on year.
Among them, 284,000 tons were imported from Japan, surging by 91%; 129,000 tons were from the US, falling by 48.6% and 18,000 tons were from Hong Kong, rising by 6.6%, all compared to that in the same period of a year earlier.
In the first half of this year, China’s scrap imports totaled 2.799 million tons, up by 0.7% year on year.
In the given period of time, Japan was the largest scrap exporter to China with 1.522 million tons, soaring by 47.7%; the US was the second largest one with 855,000 tons, falling by 27.4% and Australia was the third largest one with 96,000 tons, decreasing by 22.7%, all compared to that in the same period of a year ago.
It’s estimated that China’s scrap imports in the whole 2012 would reach 5.6 million tons.
