Japan’s May steel exports hit 15-month high
|
According to data released by the Japan Iron & Steel Federation (JISF), Japan’s steel exports totaled 4.01 million tons in May, soaring substantially by 30% from a month earlier and increasing by 21% year on year, driven by depreciated Japanese Yen.
Among them, the exports of carbon steel increased by 25% to 2.52 million tons and that of special steel surged by 34% to 822,536 tons, both compared to that in a month earlier.
The steadily strong demand from overseas auto sector pushed up the country’s exports of flat rolled steel. The exports of galvanized steel sheets to China and Thailand surged by 33% and 39.5% from a month earlier to 99,115 tons and 115,357 tons respectively.
Meanwhile, the exports of semi-finished steel soared by 67% from a month ago to 555,002 tons, mainly to Taiwan.
