South Korea’s May scrap imports up by 4.5% y-o-y

According to statistics, South Korea imported 929,000 tons of scraps in May, rising by 4.5% year on year while decreasing by 3% from a month earlier.
In May, Japan was the largest scrap exporter to South Korea with 379,000 tons, soaring substantially by 2.8 times; the US was the second largest one with 298,000 tons, decreasing by 36.5% and Russia was the third largest one with 58,000 tons, falling by 37.4%, all compared to that in the same period of a year earlier.
In the first five months of this year, South Korea’s scrap imports amounted to 4.29 million tons, jumping by 24.4% year on year.
Accordingly, it’s estimated that the country’s scrap imports in the full 2011 would reach 10.30 million tons.
