Japan’s Q1 stainless steel output falls by 8.4% y-o-y

According to statistics released by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the country’s stainless steel output totaled 706,500 tons in the first quarter of this year, falling by 8.4% in comparison of 771,300 tons in the same period of a year earlier.
Meanwhile, the decreased stainless steel output in the first quarter has caused the country’s nickel consumption drop.
In the first quarter of this year, Japan’s nickel consumption totaled 10,430 tons, decreasing by 10.8% from 11,686 tons in the same period of the previous year, according to data showed by the METI.
Among them, the nickel consumption from the specialty steel sectors dropped by 13.1% year on year to 8,366 tons in the first quarter of this year.
