EU steelmakers to plan lobby EU Commission for restriction on steel scrap export
It is reported that European steelmakers are pressuring the EU Commission to impose bans on steel scrap export to help preserve their domestic raw material stocks.

On the sidelines of a conference organized last week by the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR), a source said that European steelmakers are lobbying the EU Commission to prohibit the export of scrap from Europe, the steelmakers including some top producers in Europe.

As per second source who works at a metal scrap recycler said, some US steelmakers as well as some European producers are pushing effort on this ban, one steelmaker has got its lawyers on the case, looking for a way to present this. But he also said that EU Commission is unlikely to move in this direction just yet but if things start to get a little bit worst for the steel industry many countries would be in favor of such a measure.

According to OECD trade directorate, about 20% of the global steel scrap trade is currently subject to export restrictions, against 14% of the copper scrap and % of the aluminum scrap trade.

In most cases, governments which do apply export bans, taxes or quotas do so to safeguard domestic supply or control illegal activity, according to the trade directorate.
