India to become world’s second largest crude steel producer by 2015

Mr. Beni Prasad Verma, the Indian steel minister expected that the country’s steel industry which contributes over 2% to the GDP to becp,e the world’s second largest crude steel producer by 2015.
He added that the Indian steel capacity have surged to 89 million tons in fiscal year 2011/12 from 66 million tons in the fiscal year 2008/09.
The Indian per capita steel consumption has soared to 55 kilograms in fiscal year 2010/11 from 38 kilograms in year 2005/06, Mr. Verma said.
