BHP Billiton may temporarily stop manganese alloy production in Tasmania
|
According to report, mining giant BHP Billiton will temporarily stop the manganese alloy production at its TEMCO operation in Tasmania on weak demand and higher costs.
Currently, it faces the dropping profits on strong Australian dollars and rising input costs, including electricity makes exports less competitiveness. Demand in Europe and North America is slower and prices remain low.
Its TEMCO operation produces about 65,000 tons a year of silicon-manganese and 240,000 tons of high carbon ferromanganese and it’s the joint ventures of BHP Billiton and Anglo American with holding 60% and 40% of stakes respectively.
