Chinese coke exports down for first 10 months of 2005

According to statistics released by Chinese customs, the import of iron ore and scrap increased during October. The export of coke for the period was down. During the first 10 months of the year, China imported 221 million tons of coke, up 32.11 percent compared to the same period last year. The average price of coke imported was US$67 per ton and a total value was US$148.5 million, up 43.82 percent. It is estimated that China will import 208 million tons of coke in 2005. The import of scrap totaled 8, 870, 000 tons, up 3.35 percent. The total value of the imports reached US$ 2.24 billion, up 21.63 percent. Chinese coke exports totaled 10.61 million tons, down 11.92 percent compared to the same period last year. This is because the international market was very soft. At present, the price for first class coke in stock is about US$125 to 130 per tons FOB in China. (Dec. 5)
