Alcan looking to sell Steg smelter

Alcan Inc. could possibly sell its 44,000 tpy aluminum smelter in Steg, Switzerland. Alcan is currently in “preliminary discussions” with Swiss consortium lead by Albert Bass. The operations in Steg was one of three Alcan facilities in Europe that has been cited as facing serious challenges. According to the site director of Alcan Aluminium Valais SA in Sierre, Switzerland, Daniel Anliker “Alcan has informed government agencies and, works councils and its Steg employees of its intensions.” This discussion is just beginning, and if the result is positive, a definitive timetable for the sale will be determined.
